    BASKETBALL: Eleven days before the beginning of the Eurobasket in Turkey, Greek coach Kostas Petropoulos is confident on his team chances. " There are ten teams who can win a medal and Greece is definitely one of them" he said. Greece will play its last three friendlies during the Acropolis Cup starting tomorrow versus Italy.

    SAILING: Greek wind surfer Nikos Kaklamanakis is in 24th place after the completion of the first day of the Mistral World Championships that are held in Vari - Varkiza. The Atlanta Olympic Gold medalist never came back from a poor start and finish way behind the top places.

    WATER-POLO: The Greek junior national team is the new World Champion afetr beating Croatia 8-7. "This is a great success for Greece and the future of water-polo. I want to thank all the people who helped our team during this tournament" said team coach Tassos Doubas. Greece took a definitive advantage in the game in the third quarter where they took a 7-4 lead. A late push by Croatia did not change the outcome of the game.

    BASKETBALL: The Greek national team defeated The University of Massachusetts 84-62 in a friendly game. Greek coach Kostas Petropoulos used all his players. Top scorers for Greece were Francisco Alvertis and Evthimios Retzias with 15 points. Greece will play in the Acropolis Tournament against Italy, Yugoslavia and Lithuania starting Tuesday the 21st.

    ATHLETICS: Greek Katerina Thanou won the 100 meters at the Gateshead meeting in Engalnd in 11.28. She finished ahead of World Champion Zana Pintusevich and Sandra Sturup from the Bahamas.

    WRESTLING: Greek Konstantina Tsibanakou took the silver medal in the 54kg category of the junior European Championships in Switzerland. She lost 2-5 to French Vanessa Boubrie. "I came here for the gold medal but because of some details and ended up with the silver which isn't bad at all" said Tsibanakou after the final.

    ATHLETICS: Third place; that was the result for both Kostas Kenderis and Katerina Thanou in the Golden League meeting in Zurich. The 200 meter World Champion finished in 20.28 behind American Bernard Williams and Brit Christioan Malcom. "I was tired but I won when it mattered most: at Edmonton" said Kostas Kenderis. The 100 meter women race was won by Marion Jones in front of Sandra Sturup and Katerina Thanou who ran in 11.08.

    WATER-POLO: The Greek junior national team reached the final of the World Championships in Istanbul. They won 9-5 against Hungary and will meet Croatia in the finals. "I want to congratulate the kids for their performance. We have one more game and we'll give it all" said coach Tassos Doubas.

    WRESTLING: Greek wrestler Konstantina Tsibanakou will go for the Gold medal on Sunday in the junior European Championships in Switzerland. In the final she will face French Vanessa Boubrie. "I came here to win the gold and I believe I will bring it back to Greece" said Konstantina.
